Octave Distortion + Booster
Sunn O))) and EarthQuaker Devices are pleased to bring you the Sunn O))) Life Pedal V3. The Life Pedal circuit has been meticulously tweaked from the original to squeeze every last drop of heavy crushing tone available. The octave section has been fine-tuned to make it more pronounced without losing the bottom end, and a third footswitch (utilizing Flexi-Switch Technology) for the octave allows an additional method of quick and radical tone shaping.

What Is It?
Sunn O))) Life Pedal is a distortion with a blendable analog octave up and a booster combined in one compact package. The "Amplitude" side is faithfully modeled after the classic "White Face" distortion unit, using modern, reliable components. The clipping section adds two options to the original: no diodes for full, grinding OpAmp assault; two silicon diodes and one LED in an asymmetrical configuration for a smooth, compressed crunch; and the stock double silicon diode configuration for that classic tone.

The Octave is an all-discrete, analog full-wave rectifier based on a classic vintage design. Located at the input, the Octave control slowly blends in the octave effect as you turn it clockwise, and can also be used via expression control for hands-free octave swells. The octave is monophonic and works best playing single notes above the twelfth fret using the neck pickup. The "Magnitude" section is a simple all-discrete MOSFET booster designed to blast your preamp tubes — a 100% clean, high impedance booster that adds very little color while pushing your amp into saturation. The signal path goes Octave > Distortion > Boost.

Controls
Octave: Blends in the analog octave as you turn it clockwise.
Distortion: Turn clockwise for more distortion (about +60dB of gain).
Filter: A low pass filter with a frequency response from around 500Hz to 30kHz. Counterclockwise for more high-end, clockwise for less.
Amplitude: Output volume for the octave distortion side.
Clipping Switch: OpAmp (no diodes), Asymm (two silicon diodes and one LED) or Symm (stock double silicon diode).
Magnitude: Output volume for the booster. Unity is around noon.
Amplitude / Magnitude / Octave Footswitches: Distortion, Boost and Octave activators. The octave only works when the distortion (Amplitude) is active.
Octave EXP: Connect any expression pedal to control the analog octave blend.

Flexi-Switch Technology
This relay-based, true bypass switching style allows you to simultaneously use momentary and latching style switching. Tap the footswitch once to activate and again to bypass; hold for momentary operation. Since the switching is relay based, it requires power to pass signal.

Power
This device takes a standard 9 volt DC power supply with a 2.1mm negative center barrel. We always recommend pedal-specific, transformer-isolated wall-wart power supplies or multiple isolated-output supplies. DO NOT RUN AT HIGHER VOLTAGES!
